What is KAD?

Learn more about Kanban Accelerated Delivery

Who uses KAD?

KAD is used by any business function, department, unit or team that delivers services in any industry.  It particularly works really well in professional services.

KAD for Service Delivery

Functional business areas that will most benefit from Kanban Accelerated Delivery (KAD) are those that provide services (as differentiated from manufacturing of physical products).

It does not matter if the services delivered are only consumed internally by other areas of the business. Those in the other areas that consume your services are your internal customer and so it is fine if your team does not directly serve the end user or external customer.

    KAD for Business Functions

KAD can be used enterprise-wide in any of the following business units, departments and functions:

KAD for Projects Vs. BAU Operations

It is commonly asked if KAD is used for project /program delivery or Business as Usual operations. Answer: It is used for both.   The KAD way of working is great for both Business as Usual (BAU) operations and/or in conjunction with project delivery

In fact, we recommend it for both because even in projects where the majority of the work is to be performed by external vendor, the request for information, clarification and engagement with the many internal customers or stakeholders creates additional workload that impacts daily operations.

Most projects inevitably require BAU involvement through activities like requesting feedback, collaboration for integration or handover stages e.g. User Acceptance Testing (UAT), user training.

KAD makes juggling the demands of work we have to do to keep the lights on with the need to keep strategic project delivery on track much easier.

Project managers have an easy way to see how to request services from many areas and a way to put work requests into the queues of different team kanbans and easily track their progress.

Similarly, line managers can see how much of their staff’s time is being used on project work so they can manage capacity and reallocate work as necessary.

The method of funding (Opex/Capex) of itself has little effect on KAD.  The length of the project could affect investment.  The short term projects, say less than three months do see a noticeable uplift in productivity during this time when using KAD, however, the only limitation is they won’t likely get the full effects of KAD’s continuous learning.  So if you’re looking to pilot KAD ways of working with a project, it is advised to choose one that goes for more than a year.

      KAD in Any Industry

As long as your area, team, unit or department provides a service, it does not matter which industry your team is in, nor what your business produces overall.

For example, a manufacturer of office equipment would not use all the KAD kanban ways of working on the factory floor for production operations.  However all the office administration, human resources, product development, sales, marketing and finance departments (many of which might exclusively serve internal customers within the business) will significantly benefit.

      KAD for Knowledge Workers

The more complex the work to deliver the service, the greater the benefits of using Kanban Accelerated Delivery (KAD) ways of working.   Knowledge workers are those who are required to “think for a living”[1].  Areas or departments that have a higher degree of variability, unpredictability or knowledge work have the most to benefit from KAD.

If staff are responsible for work that involves:

      • analyzing data to establish relationships
      • assessing input in order to evaluate complex or conflicting priorities
      • identifying and understanding trends
      • making connections
      • understanding cause and effect
      • required to brainstorm, thinking broadly (divergent thinking)
      • required to drill down, creating more focus (convergent thinking)
      • creating or modifying a strategy
      • producing a new capability

then the predictability and confidence of seeing your team’s capacity with Kanban Accelerated Delivery (KAD) will produce great opportunities for continuous learning to improve your team’s productivity.

      KAD for Professional Services

Businesses that provide a professional service have a high degree of knowledge work, so Kanban Accelerated Delivery is great for professional services like:

        • Actuary
        • Appraisal
        • Architecture
