When to Use Internal Columns
The purpose of Internal Columns is to help keep the order of cards within a Column or Sub-Column.
The height of a Lane automatically increases to accommodate the column with the most cards at any moment in time. You know it’s time to add an internal column when there are so many cards in a column, that you have to use the vertical scroll bar to go down more than one length of the kanban board just to see the Lane below.
Cards move across a kanban board from left to right. To maximise productivity, the next card at the very top of a column should be selected. When a card is moved out of an internal column, the remaining cards are automatically moved up to fill that slot until the cards within each internal column level out horizontally. In this way, the order of cards within the column are maintained.
Internal columns can be applied to both columns and/or sub-columns.
Internal Columns do not have their own column header, nor any analytics metrics or tracking as this remains with the sub/column header.
Internal Columns cannot be individually hidden/collapsed or shown/expanded. Internal columns can be collapsed or expanded at the same time by clicking on the grey Column or Sub-Column header.
Internal columns are separated by a thin grey line. In contrast, Columns and Sub-Columns have a white space separating them.
